betty wanna cookie?

This is Betty. She’s our 2 year-old morkie (maltese yorkie). I have never made dog cookies before, but I saw these adorable doggy cookie cutters at Muji (I love this store) and couldn’t resist.

The best part about this recipe, is that there is no recipe. Find anything healthy from the pantry (no cocoa!). I used (in order of quantity) brown rice flour (about 2 cups), rolled oats, steel cut oats and quinoa. Add some peanut butter as a binder, and moisten with low-sodium chicken stock (or water will work too) till you get a dough that holds together.

Roll it out, use a favourite cookie cutter, or just cut into squares. Place on parchment lined cookie sheet and bake on low heat at 250°F for 1 hour, then turn off and leave in oven for another hour to dry out. Make sure it’s thoroughly dry or they will spoil. Pop back in oven if it isn’t.

I also divided the dough and did a version with chopped calves liver added in. I must say, it’s hard to cut dough into nice shapes when you’ve got chunks of raw liver in it. What I really should have done was purée it in the food processor; this would give a nice “chocolate” colour to the cookie…but a visual of that would horrific. Be warned, if you don’t like liver, close your eyes for the next photo…

I purposely kept the calves liver image small, nobody needs to see this big…even though it is delicious pan fried in butter & onions.

Hard to get a clean cut without hitting liver. It could almost pass as cranberries.

It was easier to shape some into “thumbprint” cookies filled with more liver.

They turned out rather good! Like liver raisins.

Cookie anyone? I’m just waiting to see if Hubby eats one of these when he gets home…I’ll just leave them out on the counter…

“Betty wanna cookie?”…“CHOMP!”

“Betty want another cookie?”…“GNARFFFF!”

“Sniff…sniff”

“ARGUMPH!”…Hands down, Betty’s favourite.
My one-bowl mixture made three cookie trays worth of dog biscuits.
