There is nothing nicer to do on a cold, rainy, blustery day, than to hang out in the greenhouse. The moment you walk in, you are no longer in the city. The warm humid air, woodsy smell, and sound of water in our fish tank, takes you deep within a tropical forest. This is how we spent a very dreary April afternoon, tucked into this little oasis, armed with seed packages galore.
Sunshine is not dead (she’s pretending to be soaking in a tub)…though she should be in my stock pot after flipping over my tray of newly planted seeds yesterday. It’ll be a guessing game of “what’s this vegetable?” Ugh!
The girls enjoy hanging out with us, bathing in the greenhouse.
Kids helped me plant, nice to see them take an active interest.
The birds enjoy a break from the cold rain, sharing Betty’s homemade dog biscuits.
Every week we’ve been planting to ensure a succession of fresh produce throughout the season.
GREEN UPDATE:
The mixed lettuce greens are coming up, and so are the asian veggies: Yu Choy Sum, and Shanghai Bok Choy. We are currently gearing up to raise either Tilapia or Perch, as well as Malaysian Fresh Water Prawns in our tiny 8′ x 8′ greenhouse. Additional grow beds will be added to continue our on-going experiment with aquaponics. Another project is making Global Buckets, where we will be growing Jade Blue Corn. These cute little miniature corn reach only 3′ high and can be grown in containers. The plant produces sweet corn that turn jade blue when cooked. The great thing about the buckets is that you can move them around for best light, or keep on your deck or patio.
Deirdre Pickford - wow – that’s amazing – your almost sustainable – have you thought about any energy saving projects? i might try the global bucket idea….and beautiful photog as always!!
Jill - I have seen a solar panel made up of coke cans that I’ve wanted to try. I want to be able to add solar heat to the greenhouse this winter. Our backyard is one big science experiment! cross my fingers!
